About the Beans

Coffee in Yemen is cultivated in mountainous regions across high plateaus and valleys, typically at elevations between 1,600 and 2,100 meters above sea level. Yemen holds a unique place in coffee history, as one of the earliest regions to cultivate coffee after its introduction in the 15th century by Sufi monks.

Farming is traditionally carried out on small family-owned plots, ranging from around 60 to 500 coffee trees. The primary varieties grown are Jaadi and Udaini, known for their resilience and consistent quality.

In recent years, Yemen has faced significant challenges, including the civil conflict that began in 2014, which has impacted coffee production and availability. Despite this, Yemeni farmers have shown remarkable resilience, and supply chains have gradually been re-established across several key regions. By 2021, Yemen successfully exported specialty coffee to international markets including Japan, Australia, the Middle East, the UK, and Europe.

Yemeni coffee is produced using traditional methods on small terraced farms in high-altitude environments. All cherries are hand-picked, cultivated using natural organic fertilizers, and carefully dried on raised beds or rooftop surfaces.

These coffees are sourced through Mocha Mill, one of Yemen’s pioneering specialty coffee exporters, who place a strong emphasis on sustainability. This is especially important in a country facing ongoing challenges such as drought and water scarcity.
